Weekly Geeks #17: Quote #1

Poor abandoned book blog. I shall be participating in Weekly Geeks #17, so there’ll be a post a day for a week, even though they might only be one-sentence quotes!

Quote 1:

I shall send gems of lapis lazuli: I shall make her fields into vineyards, and the field of her love into orchards.

From Dorothy Dunnett’s Checkmate, though it’s actually a quote of a quote. Trying to explain how it relates in terms of context when it comes to the story makes me go argh, because of spoilers and rather mind-boggling things the characters do, so I will not attempt it. This might end up with me quoting people in The Lymond Chronicles quoting stuff, and we’ll drive ourselves dizzy trying to figure who’s saying what.

A Google search turned up a few interesting links: here and here. Apparently “gems of lapis lazuli” etc was what the Canaanite god of the moon, Yarikh, was offering to his bride Nikkal, the goddess of orchards, for her hand in marriage.

I like it. Very poetic. :)

That’s beautiful! I had no idea what lapis lazuli was so I looked it up on Wikipedia - it is such a gorgeous gem.
